What You Might Not Know About Dr. G.

Dr. Jorge Gutierrez, known in the office as Dr. G., has practiced orthodontics in the Houston and Katy area since 1986. A graduate of the UT Health School of Dentistry, he has years of experience in both Invisalign Orthodontics as well as traditional braces for both children and adults. While he is passionate about his work, he focuses on a different passion outside of the office: triathlons.

Dr. G. has been a nationally ranked triathlete for the past 10 years and has been racing for about 15. In that time, he primarily focused on sprint distance events and has claimed both first, second, and third place titles multiple times in his age group. These accomplishments have taken him to the state championship several times, and he has qualified for the national sprint championship 10 times.

In 2017, Dr. G. shifted his focus from sprint distance to “long course” triathlon races. More specifically, he set his sights on completing his first Ironman in the Cozumel Ironman race. An Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile ocean swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and a full 26.2 mile marathon. However, his training was stunted when he and his training partners were hit by a car during a bike training session. The accident occurred 90 days before race day, and Dr. G. had to forfeit the Cozumel Ironman race. After two separate surgeries and many physical recovery challenges, Dr. G. decided he wanted to try again.

On March 5th, 2019, 18 months after the accident, Dr. G. registered for the Ironman Florida in Panama City Beach, Florida. He continued his training and kept his sights on his goal. On November 3rd, 2019, Dr. G.’s dream of being an Ironman came true. Not only did he finish, but he placed 5th in his age group with a time of 11 hours, 54 minutes and nearly qualified for the World Championship Ironman in Kona, Hawaii.

Dr. G. attributes his success to the overwhelming support of his wife and children. Of the experience, he remarked, “I could have never made that comeback after the accident without the love and support of my wife and without my faith in the Lord and His plans for my life.”
