Early Orthodontic Treatment: Why It May Matter More Than You Think

Early Orthodontic Treatment may matter more than you think. It’s not about making kiddos go through “two rounds of treatment.” It’s about addressing issues early so that as they age, a foundation is set for a comfortable and confident smile.

Everyone is born with two sets of teeth. At a young age, as early as age 7, children have what is called mixed dentition — they’re in the transition between baby teeth and adult teeth. It’s a common myth that it’s best to wait for all adult teeth before starting orthodontic treatment. For some, that’s actually not the case, and early preventative treatment can be beneficial to your child’s smile journey!

According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), children should be first evaluated at age 7. At KCC Orthodontics, we begin evaluations around this age — sometimes even sooner! Early evaluation allows our team to spot potential concerns such as jaw growth imbalances, bite misalignments, or unusual eruption patterns before they become bigger challenges.

What are we actually looking for? A few of the most common issues we catch at these early visits:

  • Bite and alignment problems — underbites, crossbites, and open bites happen when the upper and lower teeth don’t meet correctly. Left unaddressed, these can affect how a child chews and speaks, and may even influence facial balance as they grow.
  • Crowding and spacing issues — crowded teeth, gaps, or extra or missing teeth can throw off alignment as permanent teeth erupt. Catching these early gives us the chance to guide teeth into a healthier position while your child is still growing.
  • Habits affecting growth — thumb, finger, or pacifier sucking can seem harmless, but prolonged habits can quietly reshape how the front teeth and jaws develop. The earlier we catch this, the more gently we can correct it.

With the advancements in technology, Dr. Gutierrez has been using Invisalign First for many of our Phase I (early orthodontics) treatments. Invisalign First is a treatment plan specifically designed for children with growing smiles. This aligner system offers a gentle way to guide tooth movement and jaw development at this early age. Like an adult aligner system, these are clear, removable aligners that make daily routines easier for kids. The best part — Phase I Invisalign First treatment helps create the foundation for future orthodontic care! For kids who need a bit more guided jaw development alongside aligners, we also use traditional braces for kids in select cases, making small adjustments over time to build that same healthy foundation.

At KCC Orthodontics, every evaluation (or consultation) is free. Our mission is to provide an extraordinary experience for our patients, their families, and the community. This starts with the first appointment! Our records procedure includes being scanned by a 3D digital scanner called iTero. This 3D scan helps Dr. Gutierrez create your child’s unique treatment plan, in a way that addresses both straightening of teeth and allowing adult teeth to erupt in the proper place, as well as addressing any bite alignment issues early.

Another benefit to early orthodontic treatment is setting up the jaw and bite in a way that creates a foundation for your child’s airway as they grow. This is where palatal expanders come in. A palatal expander gently widens the upper jaw along the mid-palatal suture — a growth line down the center of the palate that’s still soft and flexible in growing children — which makes this the ideal window to create extra room for incoming adult teeth and support a healthier bite. We often use the Invisalign Palatal Expander specifically: a series of custom, 3D-printed expanders built for each child’s mouth that gradually widen the upper arch, without the metal frame or manual screw-turning of a traditional expander. Because it’s removable, kids can take it out to brush and floss normally, which makes it easier to stay on top of oral hygiene throughout treatment.

Although early treatment matters, not every child needs treatment right away! At KCC Orthodontics, we have an Observation program that Dr. Gutierrez uses with many patients. He is very conservative and will always consider what is best for your child. If your child is not ready right away, we will add them to our Observation program so that Dr. Gutierrez can monitor their growth patterns on a 6, 12, 18, or 24 month basis.

At the end of the day, there’s no downside to knowing early. Whether your child needs treatment now, benefits from a bit of monitoring, or isn’t ready for anything just yet, an early evaluation gives you clarity and a plan — instead of guesswork. If you’re curious where your child stands, schedule a free consultation with KCC Orthodontics in Katy, TX, and let’s find out together what their smile journey looks like.
