Metal braces – require brackets and archwires. Used to correct bite and straighten teeth.
Clear aligners – clear plastic trays that guide teeth through a series of movements. Used for bite correction and to straighten teeth. In our office, we use Invisalign clear aligners.
The following comparisons will help you decide on an orthodontic treatment option.
Appointments
Invis: On average, clear aligner treatments have a shorter appointment time. These range from 15-30 minutes. There are also fewer appointments necessary to complete treatment.
Metal braces: Your first and last appointments could be 45-90 minutes long. Additionally, there could be appointments during treatment that need more than 30 minutes. These often also have limited schedule availability.
Comfort
Invis: Invisalign clear aligners are virtually invisible. Every treatment is customized to your unique treatment needs. Each aligner is contoured to the shape of your teeth, which makes them fit comfortably in your mouth.
Metal braces: With traditional braces, your mouth will need time to get used to the brackets. This can sometimes cause mouth sores. Orthodontic wax is used to help ease any discomfort. No crunchy, chewy, or sticky foods are allowed with metal braces. Additionally, staining of the teeth can occur if your oral health is not properly cared for.
Confidence
Invis: You can be confident your lifestyle doesn’t have to change! Want to eat peanuts at the ballgame or sour patch kids at the movies? No problem! Clear aligners are removable. So, there aren’t any restrictions on your eating habits. You will need to remove them during eating and when drinking any liquid that isn’t water. Additionally, you must be diligent in wearing your aligners for at least 22 hours a day!
Metal braces: Put your mind at ease, knowing your orthodontic treatment is moving forward. We use orthodontic glue to secure the brackets onto your teeth.
Price
On average, Invisalign has a higher investment than metal brackets. You may use dental insurance with orthodontic coverage toward either investment. Additionally, at KCC Orthodontics, we strive to make pricing comparable. We also offer 0% financing to all patients for either treatment option.
